VOLUNTEER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS

Volunteer research assistants commit 5 hours/week, for at least one semester, and help conduct or support studies. Typically, volunteer research assistants have a high GPA (4.0 and higher) and plan to apply to a graduate program in Psychology or other disciplines or a professional program (e.g., Medicine, Law).

There are many advantages of volunteering. Students who volunteer in the lab:

  • get exposure to how research in Personality and Social Psychology is conducted.

  • receive valuable professional training (e.g., information on how to apply to graduate schools).

  • are considered first to complete an honors thesis with Dr. Starzyk, so long as they maintain excellent academic standing and are interested in doing research in one of her areas of expertise.

  • are considered first for paid lab research assistantships, when available and if there is a good match between the volunteer's skills and job requirements.

  • obtain reference letters from Dr. Starzyk, for graduate school and job applications.

Students who intend to apply for graduate study in Psychology should position themselves so that they can obtain three academic reference letters from people such as professors who can say good things about their skills and that they know them relatively well. Students planning on applying to graduate schools should therefore seek to obtain volunteer experience as early as their second and third years.

  • Meet other students in Psychology and tend to experience a greater sense of connectedness to the university.

This year, Dr. Starzyk will consider applications on a rolling basis. Interested students should complete the application at the link below.

Preference will be given to students in their second or third year of academic training.

PAID RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS

None available at this time. Paid research assistantships usually go to students already in the lab.

Paid research assistantships are also possible through awards (see section here).
